Lotus and mandala tattoo on the upper abdomen
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A bare midriff is shown with a white shirt lifted to reveal a black ink lotus flower with a circular mandala-style centre. The design is built from dense dotwork stippling, with bold outlines and fine tonal detail in the petals and central medallion. The tattoo is the clear focus against the white clothing and bedding, with the image shown in near-monochrome tones.

The third bulkhead had sweated all night, so I was on my knees with a mop when the chime rang for Ring Four. Ottilie had already left her pump and was running barefoot down the spoke, which is the only time anyone runs on the Vesna. Four years we had kept the lotus alive in its tank of recycled grey water, four years of dotting seeds into sand with a needle and waiting, and now the first bloom had finally split its shell.

It was not a flower the way the old pictures show them. The petals came out black-veined and tight, folded like the shutters of a camera, and at the centre a disc of tiny seed pods had arranged itself in rings. Ottilie sketched it on the wall in grease pencil before the light could fade: a medallion inside a crown of petals, every ring a little off true because the plant had leaned toward the lamp. She said the old monks painted these to hold a place in their heads while they thought. I said it would make a fine map of the ship if you squinted, and she said that was the whole point.
We copied the sketch into the hydroponics log and pinned the real bloom to the bulkhead. When the Vesna reached the belt we would need to know which ring the sun was passing through, and the pods gave the answer every hour, opening and closing in order like a slow clock.
On the last night before the burn I went down alone with a torch. The disc had turned to face the drive glow, and every seed had lifted toward it. I counted the rings twice, then wrote the number on my palm so I would not lose it in the dark.
