The hedge along Cobb Lane had been cut back twice that summer, and Edie Harrow dreaded the sound of the shears more than the ache in her bad knee. She came out at dawn with a flask of tea and found the fresh cut ends still weeping sap, and on the bank below the hawthorn a fairy sitting on a heap of foxglove petals, as if she had been left there by mistake.

"You'll have to go," Edie said, setting the flask down on the verge. "The council crew are back at noon with the tractor, and they'll not look where they're cutting." The fairy lifted her chin. Her hair fell over one shoulder in a long pale river, and her wings, broad as a kitchen door and marked with eyes and panels, opened slowly and then folded again. "This was my house before your road was a road," she said. Her voice had the dry rasp of a leaf turning over.
Edie sat down on the damp grass, because her knee had decided it, and poured the tea into the cup lid. The fairy watched her the way a cat watches a bird it has already decided not to catch. They talked about the lane when it was just ruts and hazel, about who had planted the hawthorn and why the old gate still swung on one hinge. Sorrel traced a vein on her own wing with one finger and said each one was a path she had walked a hundred summers ago, and that the maps for them were in her mother's head, and her mother was dead.
At eleven Edie stood, groaning, and walked up to the foreman with her clipboard. She said the bank was full of nesting wrens, which was nearly true, and that the council would have to answer for it if they went through a live hedge in July. He swore, scratched his neck, and waved the tractor round. When the engine finally pulled away towards the village, the lane was quiet again. By evening there was only one foxglove petal left on the verge, pale and folded like a closed hand, and Edie left it where it lay.
