Winged dragon tattoo design

Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a winged dragon with its head turned to the left, mouth open and teeth bared, and its wings spread above its body. Its long, serpentine tail curls into a loop at the bottom of the image, with spiked ridges along its back and clawed feet visible. The image uses fine hatched linework and tonal shading in black and grey on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The reunion was held in the function room above the Crown, the same room where we had sat our mocks, and Dennis Parr was still the only one of us who could make a dragon out of biro. Nobody had seen him since the summer we left Harrowgate Comprehensive. He had spent every maths lesson filling the back pages of his exercise book with wings as fine as cobweb, each feather hatched so tightly the paper went grey under his thumb.

Mrs Achterberg caught him at it in the third week of Year Nine and held the book up to the window like evidence. Instead of a detention, she asked him to draw the thing properly on the board for the whole class. He took the chalk and stood with his back to us, and the dragon came out in one unbroken sweep, head snapping round at the top, tail spiralling down past the radiator and curling into a loop that nearly knocked the duster off the ledge. Even Gary Pike went quiet.

Tonight Dennis was by the buffet, making a point with a sausage roll, and I heard him say he still drew dragons every morning before the post came, just for himself. I asked whether he had kept the old exercise book. He laughed and said Mrs Achterberg had pinned that drawing above her desk until she retired, and that nobody had ever asked him how the tail was meant to finish.

I told him I would walk past the school gates in the morning and look. He shrugged and said the chalk had run out before the loop closed, and that was the only part he had never been able to get right.
