Grey dragon with pink ribbons on upper back

Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo

A dragon with outstretched wings and a long coiled tail is shown in black and grey shading, with soft highlights along the wings and body. Thin pink ribbon-like shapes trail around the figure, adding colour against the grey. The design is centred on the upper back and fills most of the frame.

Nobody at the Halden crossing had ever stamped a dragon's papers, so Ilse Varga sent it to the wooden hut and told it to wait behind the lorries. It came in at dusk, folding its grey wings one joint at a time, and the pink ribbon trailing from its shoulder caught on the barrier and tore. "Name?" she asked. The dragon looked at the torn ribbon as if it belonged to someone else.

Her father had kept the crossing before her, and his father before him, and the rule was simple: anything that crossed the river had to be counted and carried honestly. So she counted. Three ribbons, pink as cut plums, streamed from the tail, the wing edge and the throat. Each one, the dragon explained, was something it had promised to carry for someone on the far bank and had not yet delivered.

Ilse wrote them into the ledger: a letter for a miller's widow, a key for a chapel that had been locked since the flood, a song for a child who had gone north to school and forgotten the words. Then she lifted the barrier. The dragon coiled its long tail through the gate, slow as rope being paid out, and rose into the wind above the water.

In the morning the ledger had a fourth line in her own handwriting, though she did not remember writing it: one ribbon, pink, returned from the far bank. It was tied to the gatepost, and it was still damp.
