Winged elephant walking forward

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A large elephant with outstretched feathered wings walks head on towards the viewer, with its tusks and trunk clearly drawn. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft grey gradients on the skin folds and wings and dark outlines defining the forms. The tattoo fills most of the frame against plain pale skin, with a faint shadow beneath the feet.

Dear Nell,

You will not believe what walked past the back gate of the bakery at ten to five this morning. I had the first tray of tin loaves out on the step, steam coming off them in the cold, when the lamp at the end of Mill Lane went pale and something came up out of the fog. An elephant. Grey as the slate on the chapel roof, walking straight at me with its trunk swaying and its great wings folded back against its shoulders like a pair of old umbrellas. I dropped the peel. Mr Adeyemi came out swearing about the flour, then stopped dead beside me and said nothing at all.

It did not hurry. It walked the way Gran used to walk to chapel, head level, every step set down with care, and its eyes were small and wet and looked at the bread rather than at us. I thought it was hungry. So I broke the heel off a cob and held it out, and the trunk came curling up towards my hand, soft as a glove, and took the crust as gently as you'd take a coin from a child.

Then it turned, slow as a ship, and went off up the hill towards the railway bridge, wings lifting a little with each step as if the air were thicker up there. By the time the sun touched the gasworks there was nothing left but four neat prints in the frost and a feather the length of my arm stuck in the bin.

I've kept it. Come home at Easter and I'll show you.

Love, Bea
