Winged emblem on a stomach with arm lettering
Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black winged emblem with a ribbon banner bearing script lettering sits on the stomach, with the wings spread outward and the banner across the centre. Along the outer forearm, a vertical line of black block lettering reads Young Lust. The image is black and grey, with a close crop on the midriff, a white knotted top, and a lit cigarette and stacked bracelets at the left edge.

The big top at Harrow Fell had lost its red since the spring, and the canvas hung grey where the rain sat in it. Old Tobias Quill kept the winged banner folded in a tin trunk under the ticket wagon, the one with the ribbon across its middle and words stitched in gold thread that nobody could read any more because the gold had gone brown. He took it out every evening and shook it over the sawdust as if it might still fly.

The county men came in October with a paper saying the ground was wanted for houses. Tobias had no argument to give them. He had two horses that would not stand still, a clown who drank his wages, and a lamp that sputtered whenever the wind came off the moor. So he went to the caravan of the Widow Mabry, who was said to trade in weather, and asked her what a dying show could buy.
She told him a banner with wings would carry a company wherever it was unrolled, but only if someone was willing to go up with it. Then she pinched out his lamp and sent him back across the field in the dark.
He found the trunk where he had left it. The wings were stiff, but when he lifted them the ribbon grew warm and the faded letters began to lift from the cloth, one by one, like starlings off a wire. He ran the banner up the pole before dawn, and the whole field rose after it. The county men came back in spring to pour their foundations and found only a ring of flattened grass and a single tent peg. The trunk is still under the ticket wagon, they say, and some mornings there is gold thread on the lid.
