Winged figure and horned figure across a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A full back tattoo shows a bearded winged figure holding a staff, looming over a muscular, horned figure who is kneeling and reaching upward. Clouds and feathered wings fill the background, and bold blackletter-style lettering with numerals runs across the upper back. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong contrast and soft gradients in black ink and grey wash.

My lamp flickered, then steadied. Across from me my father rested his forehead against the wet iron and said nothing, which was how I knew he was counting seconds the way he counted shifts.

He kept a picture folded in his tin, cut from a Sunday supplement. It showed a winged man with a long staff standing over a horned creature on its knees, one hand flung up as though it could still catch the hem of the angel's robe. Dad said the angel was the overman who never once went below, and the thing on the ground was the owner who had sent a thousand boys into the gas and never looked at the roof. I was nine and believed every word. Years later I found the same painting in a library book about Milton, and I understood he had only bent the story to fit the valley.

The cage shuddered and lifted. Somewhere above us the winding engine groaned, and the shaft's black walls began to slide downward past the glass of our lamps. Dad took out his tin, looked at the folded picture for a moment, then put it back without unfolding it.

We stepped out into the grey morning together, and the first thing I saw was the pithead wheel turning slowly against a sky with no clouds in it at all. The reaching hand stayed with me, open and empty, the way it always does.
