Winged figure and horned demon on a back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large back piece shows a bearded, long-haired winged figure with one arm outstretched and draped robes across the torso, set against a dark feathered background. Below and to the right, a horned, bearded figure emerges from the shadows, shown with detailed skin texture and strong contrast. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, mostly grey and black with warmer brown and orange tones in the lower half, and the composition fills the whole back.

Dear Nell,

The crate came off the lorry at half past nine, and Mr Hale wouldn't let us open it until the yard lamps were lit, so we stood about in our coats with the canal steaming behind the sheds. You asked what the commission is. It is an angel for the new chapel at Holbeck. The patron wants Michael with one arm flung out over the gate, calling the wicked down. Mr Hale has already carved the wings, and in the lamplight they rise like a rooftop.

But the block was cut wrong for an angel. A grey vein ran straight through the middle of it, and Hale spent three nights with the claw chisel working round it until the vein became a shadow, and the shadow became a figure hunched low under the drapery, one hand pressed flat to the ground. Then he gave it horns. I asked him who it was. He said the patron would never ask and the bishop's man would never look properly.

Tonight he made me hold the lamp while he cut the beard, and he said the trick was never to carve the devil at all, only to leave him where the light gave out. I think he is ashamed of it, and I think he is proud of it, which is how Father used to be about the bees.

I'll be home for Sunday if the frost holds. Give Mum my love, and don't let her tell you I've been eating properly.

Your brother, Tom
