Winged heart and roses on the abdomen
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A winged heart sits at the centre of the image, wearing a teal top hat and wrapped by a banner with partly visible lettering that is too cropped to read. Red roses surround it above and below, and the dark grey feathered wings are shaded with defined linework. The colour is mostly red, teal and grey against a softly blurred background, with a navel piercing and the top of blue jeans visible.

Dear Tom, the ward was quiet until half past two, when Mr Okafor in bay four decided he wanted to go home to Lagos, then to Nottingham, and finally to his old job at the docks. I sat with him while the kettle went cold at the desk. He kept tapping the winged heart on his forearm, the one with the green hat, and telling me it was done by a man in Brighton who charged him a pound a petal for the roses. I don't know if that was true. I think he'd have agreed to anything to keep me talking.

Mostly I thought about what you said at Mum's, that I should stop working nights because nothing good happens after midnight. Something good happens every night, Tom. It's just usually small. A man remembers the name of his dead dog. A teenager stops pretending she isn't frightened. Last Tuesday a porter called Dev drew a winged heart on a paper cup for a little boy with a broken wrist, top hat and all, and the boy wore it like a crown for the rest of the shift.
The banner on Mr Okafor's heart had lettering I couldn't make out, and he wouldn't tell me what it said either. He just laughed and said some words are only for the person who carries them. Love, Nell.
