Winged heart on the back
Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo
A red heart with a shaded, textured surface sits centred between two outstretched feathered wings. The wings use grey shading with blue highlights and dark outlines, and the heart has a darker edge that gives it volume. The tattoo is centred on skin with a reddish tone, with the wings spreading out to the sides of the frame.

Pull your chair in, closer, the wind's only trying the door. My grandmother kept the light on Scarrow Head when the lamp still ran on paraffin and the glass was older than the village. There was one pane she never let anyone clean, a red one, cut heart-shaped by a glazier from Penzance who drowned before he was paid. Red for the heart, she said, so the boats know someone is still waiting on them.

Every autumn the gulls came to that pane. Grey birds, dark at the wingtips, with a blue sheen when the sun caught them low over the water, and they'd beat against the glass as if it were a window onto somewhere warmer. The men said it was bad luck. My grandmother said it was only birds being birds, and she'd sit with her knitting and count them off on her fingers.
The winter of the big sea, a wave tore the rail clean off the gallery and the red pane cracked straight through the middle. She swore she'd let the light go dark before she fitted a plain one. Then one night a single gull came down out of the storm, folded itself against the broken glass, and held there while the beam swept round. In the morning there was nothing on the step but a grey feather tipped in blue, and the lamp burned red again, with no glazier needed.
