Pair of angel wings on the inner wrist
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A pair of angel wings is tattooed on the inner wrist, with the two wings facing outwards from a central gap. The feathers are drawn with fine, layered linework and soft grey shading that gives them depth and texture. The ink is almost entirely black and grey, with a faint bluish cast on the shading of the right wing, and the design sits centred on the wrist against plain skin.

The first thing the postmistress asked was whether I meant to send the feathers back or keep them, and I told her I had never meant to send anything at all. Forty years I had carried the box between the post office and the chapel and never once looked inside. Then Aggie Lowther died in the cold month, and the vicar handed it to me because my hands were the steadiest in Dunmere, which is a joke, because my hands have shaken since the flood.

Inside was a pair of wings, not whole ones, only the long primary feathers pressed flat in tissue paper, grey at the tips and pale near the quill. Someone had written on the lid in pencil: For Tom, when he is ready. Tom was my brother. He went down the river the spring we were nine and came up three days later with nothing in his pockets but a blue glass marble. I had always believed Aggie kept him from me on purpose.
So I walked the box out past the mill to where the reed beds open onto the water, and I laid the feathers on the surface one by one. They did not sink. They turned slowly, the grey ones darkening, the one with the faint blue sheen catching the light like a drop of wet ink, and they drifted towards the far bank as if something under the water was drawing them there. I did not wait to see where they landed. Some debts are only paid by letting go of the thing you were meant to deliver.
