Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil-style drawing of a heart with outstretched feathered wings on either side, centred on the page. Fine hatched linework and soft grey shading define the feathers, while the heart sits above a dense, layered flower or lotus base. Her husband Tom sailed on the Mary Lodge for the far ports, south past the salt flats and up the brown river where the lotus grows in the mud. He sent word by every ship that turned for home. Each time, Ada wrote him a letter, folded it small, and put it in the chest beneath the lid, so that the wings held her words the way they held the heart.
In the autumn a storm came up off the headland, and the Mary Lodge struck the reef at Hollin Point. The men who lived told it that the chest floated free when the hull broke, and that Tom held onto its brass handles until the tide put him on the sand below the lighthouse. He walked the four miles home with the chest on his back and his boots full of seawater.
Ada opened it on the kitchen table. The letters had swollen to paper pulp, but at the bottom lay a dried lotus pod he had carried from the river, and it was whole and dry. She carried it to the window, set it in a clay pot with a little soil, and waited for the spring.
