Winged motif, crescent moon and rose on a hand
Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand lies flat on a tiled floor, showing a large colourful traditional-style motif with dark outlines, red, brown and teal shading and lace-like edging across the back of the hand. Nearby are an orange crescent moon, small red sparkle shapes, a small blue star on a finger and a simple arrow on another finger. A purple and green rose extends onto the wrist beneath a silver bracelet, and several silver rings are worn.

The moth came to the bakery window on the night the frost reached the lower orchard, and Hendry Ashby, who had banked the ovens at midnight as his father had, saw it pressed against the glass like a folded letter. Its wings were the brown of burnt crust, edged with a lace of silver dust, and its body was thick as a thumb. He thought it wanted the lamp. Everything in the village wanted the lamp.

His father had taught him the old rule: before the bell, bake for the night folk first. Those who walk under the moon are owed their bread, and the moth was one of them. So Hendry broke the warm heel of the loaf and set it on the sill. The moth did not eat. It opened its wings slowly, and where the light touched them a rose-coloured stain bloomed across the glass, and a small orange crescent sparked on the inside of the pane.
"What do you want for it?" he asked, because the old stories always demanded a price. The moth settled on his wrist, light as a thought, and the dust on its wings rubbed off gold onto his skin. It said nothing. It only lifted one leg toward the eastern hill, where the sky had begun to thin like milk poured into tea.
He understood then. He stoked the oven until the iron sang, slid in the first tray of dough, and when the bell rang six the loaves came out the colour of a rose held up to the light. The moth was gone. On the sill lay a single silver scale, and the crumb of the heel had been eaten clean.
