Geometric finger tattoos with feather and arrow

Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows a hand with black ink designs on the fingers, including a feather, an arrow, triangles, diamonds, zigzags and rows of dots. The linework is crisp and the shading is mostly solid black fills with some stippled dot patterns. The hand is pictured against a textured pale wall with black nail polish, and the ink is the only colour in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had lain three days when I finally found Dad's tally book, wedged behind the feed bins in the barn with its cover swollen from the damp. Every page was a flock drawn in biro. A feather marked the ewes from Haldane's land, an arrow the rams we'd bought at Kendal, a diamond anything sold on. Triangles counted the ewes that had carried twins, and each lamb after them got a dot, stacked down the margin like beads on a string.

Mrs Pryce rang at dusk. A gimmer had gone through the wall at the top field, and the wind was already rising off the fell. I took the torch, the book and the old collie, and climbed through the drifts with my breath freezing on my scarf. The prints were easy at first, neat hooves punched into the crust, then they broke into a zigzag where she had paced the wall looking for a gap that had closed years ago.

I found her in the hollow under the hawthorn, flank pressed against a boulder, a wet lamb tucked against her belly. I held the page up to the torch. Feather, diamond, two dots. That made her the second lamb she'd given us, and Dad had written beside it in pencil: count them twice, the snow never does.

We got them down by midnight, the lamb slung inside my coat and the ewe stumbling ahead of the dog. When I looked back up the slope, our tracks were looping in a long row of triangles, and I stood a while in the cold reading them like a page.
