Sit down, the lot of you, and put away those little glowing slates, because this is the one about the staff. Forty years ago, when this hall still smelled of wet coats and floor polish, a man called Mr Tobias Crane walked across the playground carrying a rod of ash wood with two grey snakes wound up it, and a pair of wings fixed to the top like a bird that had given up flying and taken up watching instead. Nobody had sent for him. He said the headmistress had asked him to settle the Mallory and Pike feud, which had been running since the spring fête and had reached the stage of lost gloves and three broken recorders.

He settled it. He stood between the two gangs on the cricket square, lifted the staff, and made each snake look at the other. Pike's snake, the one with the chipped scale, hissed first, and Mallory's answered with a rattle like coins in a tin. The wings beat once, hard enough to lift a crisp packet off the tarmac. By the bell, both boys were sitting on the same bench sharing a satsuma, and nobody could say afterwards who had given in first.

Here is the part you will not believe. The staff is still in the boiler cupboard, tucked behind the lost property box, and the wings have been mended with cycle tape. Ask the caretaker, he will show you. So if the two of you are still at it tonight over who sat where at the dinner, go and find a satsuma and see who blinks first.
