Sugar skull style cat with bow on forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cat face with a large pink bow sits on the forearm, drawn in bold black outlines in a sugar skull style. Pink flowers, a pink heart nose, gold scrollwork and small purple dots and spider web details fill the face and ears. The flat colour is set inside thick black linework and the design is centred on the forearm against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every October Marisol Ortega boiled sugar in the same copper pan her mother had used, and every October her grey cat Chapulin sat on the windowsill and watched the pan as if it owed him money. The sugar was for the skulls. She pressed them in wooden moulds, painted the foreheads with gold, and set them out on the table by the door for the people of the valley who came to remember their dead.

This year the cat was the one who got into the sugar. On the night before the procession he knocked the tin of pink sugar flowers off the shelf and dragged a pink ribbon out of the dresser drawer, the one Marisol had bought for her husband Tomas and never given him. She shouted and swept, and then she found the cat sitting in front of the big mould, pressing his own paw into the sugar and leaving a neat print. Beside it lay the ribbon, tied in a bow.

In the morning she made the skull with the cat's shape. She could not have said why. She gave it gold scrolls over the ears, a heart for a nose, flowers on both cheeks, and a bow the size of a fist. When the procession reached the cemetery on the hill, she set the sugar cat on Tomas's stone beside the marigolds and stepped back.

The wind came up off the hills and the other skulls cracked in the cold, but the cat stayed whole. Chapulin sat at the foot of the grave with his tail wrapped around his feet and watched the road down into the valley, as though someone were coming up it, and for once Marisol did not tell him to come home.
