White ink lotus mandala on chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a torso wearing a beige crochet bikini top, with one hand holding the fabric. A symmetrical lotus mandala in white ink sits centrally below the bust, built from layered petals, scrolls and dotted detail. A smaller white ornament is visible on the upper arm at the right edge, and the image has soft, even natural light.

The tank had been dry since the spring, so when my aunt asked me to carry the bag of white clay down the cracked steps, I assumed she meant to whitewash the lowest ledge before the wedding. Instead she knelt on the plates of baked mud, dipped a bamboo pin into the paste, and started a lotus from the centre outwards, the way the real one opens.

Open it from the middle, she told me, or it looks like a fan someone has folded wrong. The first petals went down slow and wobbly. Then came the scrolls at the base, curling like the tails of sleeping cats, and between them she pressed tiny dots with her thumbnail until the whole thing sat level and bright in the afternoon glare. The boys from the next lane came to watch and were told to stand in the shade. A crow landed on the rim, considered the work, and left without comment.
The monsoon came early that year, three nights before anyone expected. We heard it on the tin roofs before we smelled it. In the morning I ran down with a bucket, sure the design had washed to nothing, and found the water already at the fourth step, brown and fast. The clay had dissolved into it, but the lotus had not gone. Its outline had lifted off the stone and was floating on the surface, a pale ring of petals turning slowly in the current, perfectly symmetrical, as if someone had poured it there on purpose.
My aunt stood beside me, wiped her hands on the end of her sari, and asked whether I had brought more paint.
