Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A winking woman with dark curled hair and a patterned headscarf is drawn in bold black outline with grey shading. A small blue tear sits below one eye, and a banner beneath her reads NEVER AGAIN. The tattoo sits on a bare upper arm against a pale background.

Her mother had painted the sign on the barn door the summer the cider fund collapsed: a grinning woman with curled hair knotted in a checked scarf, one eye shut in a wink, and beneath her a ribbon of red letters that had faded to pink under forty years of weather. She dabbed a single tear beneath the painted eye, a little heavy for a joke.
By dusk the sign was fresh. Dennis read it twice, shrugged, and bought a jug anyway. Lena watched him go down the lane with the last of the sun on the river, and thought the tear suited the old woman on the door far better than the wink ever had.
