You have been told since breakfast that the balloon is not for climbing, and yet here you are, halfway up the Bramley tree with its red ribbon wound twice round your wrist. Mungo, who is round and slow and has never once been told anything twice, stands at the bottom with a jar of honey under one arm and says nothing at all, which is how you know he is thinking.

Pim is sitting on the stone wall with his knees under his chin, watching the wasps circle the windfalls. He says the balloon came from the fair in the village, that a man with a moustache sold it for a penny, and that a penny is far too much for something that will not stay put. You tell him that is exactly why you bought it. Nothing that stays put has ever taken anybody anywhere.
The wind comes up off the far field, smelling of cut hay and crushed apples, and the balloon tugs. Your feet leave the lowest branch. Mungo calls out, not in alarm but in the tone he uses for a sum that has come out wrong, and he reaches up with the honey still tucked under his arm. You rise past the top of the wall, past the wasps, past the church spire that always looks closer than it is.
From above the orchard is only a green dish with a silver stripe of stream through it. Pim has become a small striped thing with a butterfly settled on his hat, and Mungo a brown dot holding a jar. You lift your free hand and wave, and the balloon, pleased with itself, turns slowly in the warm air so the ribbon curls like a question. Below, Mungo unscrews the lid of the honey, takes one long sniff and begins to laugh, because he has worked out that you will have to come down eventually, and that he has all afternoon to wait.
