Wisdom tooth in a triangle with laurels

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A tooth sits in front of a red circle inside a black-outlined triangle, with a yellow banner across it reading WISDOM. Black laurel branches curve up each side and below the triangle. Bold black outlines and grey shading give the tooth and triangle form, while the banner, red circle and yellow add colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Pryce held the tooth up to the surgery window as if he had won it at a fair, then dropped it into a paper cup. 'Wisdom,' he said, 'and about time.' I had a mouthful of gauze and a best man's speech folded twice in my jacket pocket, and no way of saying either thing clearly.

My brother Huw had asked me to stand up for him because I was the one who never forgot a date. The speech was short: a joke about the ring, a line about the river at Llanfair where we learned to swim. The ending was the bit I was proud of. I had written it in capitals on the back of a bus ticket so I wouldn't lose it: WISDOM IS KNOWING WHICH TOOTH TO KEEP.

The speech went wrong from the first line. The gauze made my s's whistle, and the room laughed before I had reached the river. So I stopped, took the bus ticket from my pocket, and read the last line slowly, the way Mr Pryce had counted to me in the chair. Huw's face crumpled the way it hadn't since we were boys. Dilys was already crying into a napkin, and the bunting above the tables hung slack in the drizzle.

Afterwards Huw found me behind the marquee with the paper cup in his hand. Mr Pryce had sent it home with me in a sandwich bag, and I had forgotten it in my jacket all day. He turned the tooth over in the grey light, then pressed it into my palm. 'Keep this one,' he said. 'You're the wise one.' Nobody had ever called me that before, and I held the tooth until the band started.
