Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A forearm tattoo showing a framed landscape stamp with a log cabin, mountains and a rising sun, above a postcard reading wish you were here xxx with a red heart stamp. Red flowers with green leaves frame the stamp and postcard. Bold black outlines sit beneath solid colour in red, yellow, green, brown and blue, on a photo taken straight on.

The fair left the valley on a Tuesday, as it always did, the big wheel folded down like a heron settling its wings and the dodgem cars roped onto the flatbed. Bess Harker stayed behind at the last pitch with a shoebox of postcards and a borrowed fountain pen, because she had promised the lad from the cabin-raffle stall that she would write.

His name was Joss, and he had won the prize pig for the village school on the last night, which nobody believed. He had told her about his grandmother's place up past the tree line, a log cabin with a red door, where the sun came up over the ridge like a coin dropped down a well. Bess had never seen a real mountain. She had only seen the painted ones on the backdrop of the ghost train.
She wrote the first card in the lay-by and posted it in a village with one bus a week. It said nothing much. The weather, the pig, the price of chips. After that she wrote the same line on every card until the words wore thin: wish you were here, xxx. Each time she pressed a red heart stamp in the corner, because the post office only had the one design.
The fair came back to the valley the next spring. The cabin stood empty at the top of the lane with its red door faded to pink, and on the windowsill sat a stack of her cards, every one unopened and every one stamped with a heart. Under them lay a single card in Joss's careful hand, and it said only the same five words, with the kisses trailing after them like a row of little footprints.
