Mountain sunrise and roses on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a sunburst above two peaks, with pine trees, horizontal water lines and two roses framing the lower left. A curved script reading Let's be Adventurous sits along the lower right. Solid black outlines are paired with stippled dotwork shading on the mountains and sky, and the composition is set in a rounded, badge-like shape.

The boathouse board still said LET'S BE ADVENTUROUS in the paint Ruth's husband had used, the letters running on one side where the rain got under the varnish, and she had stopped noticing it years ago. Then Tomasz came down the shingle at half five with his rucksack already on, asking whether the tarn boats went out before the sun cleared the ridge. She realised he had read the board and believed it.

She told him the water was flat in the early hours, the only time it looked like a mirror and the only time the pines on the far shore doubled themselves. Two peaks stood over the tarn, the left one darker where the cloud sat on it, and the sun was still a rumour somewhere behind them. He wanted to row to the island where the rowan grew. She said the rowan had been dying since 1987 and was still there out of spite.

He pushed the first boat out without waiting for the oars or the life jacket, and she let him, because at his age her own brother had done exactly the same and come back soaked and grinning with a fish he had not caught. She watched his wake run out in lines across the grey water, each one spreading until it was gone.

When the sun finally broke, it came through a straight white gap between the peaks and laid a road across the tarn, and Tomasz stopped rowing to look at it. Ruth filled the kettle from the tap that ran cold however long you left it, and decided the board could stay as it was for another season.
