Cabin landscape in a heart frame on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A heart-shaped scalloped frame encloses a rural scene of a wooden cabin with a smoking chimney, pine trees, rolling hills, a pale sun and small sparkle motifs. The bold black outline is filled with soft teal, blue, green and lilac shading, with lighter dotted texture on the frame edge. The composition is centred and fills the heart.

The carter counted the smoke every evening. From the bend above Hollin Dale he could see the cabin where the pines gave way to the hills, and as long as a grey thread rose from its chimney he drove on past the forest edge without slowing. Nobody in Ashcombe had climbed the path since the winter Tobias Wren went up after his brother's strayed goat and came down alone, saying only that the fire had been lit for him.

One dusk the thread was missing. Halfway up the path the carter found the door unlatched and the hearth cold, though a pot of barley still hung on the iron hook. Above the mantel someone had scratched a line into the wood: keep it lit for the next one who loses the road. He knelt, blew the embers red, and fed in split pine until the flue drew. Through the little window the sky over the ridge was going green and gold, and he could make out the first stars, four of them, pricked above the far hill like nails.
He stayed until the stew was hot and the stars were all out, then walked home by the light he had made. In the morning the village asked where he had been, and he told them about the pot and the scratched line, and about the man who had kept that fire before him and must have been very cold on nights like this one.
That evening he went back up with a sack of kindling on his shoulder. From the bend above Hollin Dale, Maud saw a grey thread rise from the hill above the pines, and she set her lamp in the window so the next traveller would know the road was still there.
