Dear Nell, the boat only comes on Thursdays now, so this will sit on the dresser until Mr Aird takes the post across to Stromsay. I am writing at the table with the window open because the paraffin smell has got into everything and I would rather have wind than that.

You asked what I found on the shingle at the north end. It is a wishbone, the big one from the gannet we had at Christmas, bleached white and split clean. I have pinned it to the chart beside the place I wrote down for you: north sixty-one degrees, twenty-four minutes and a bit, east twenty-five, which is nothing on the map but a patch of blue where the tide comes round the skerry twice a day. Dad always said you could tell a fortune by where a thing washed up. I think he meant it as a joke, but I have started keeping the numbers.

The wishbone is the only thing out there that has ever been fair. You pull, one of you gets the longer half, and nobody argues because the sea decided. I told Tom Aird that and he laughed so hard he spilt his tea on the boat.

I have kept the other half back for you, because you always were the one who wished for the lighthouse to go out so you could sleep. Pull it with me when you come in July. Mind the rocks at the landing, and bring the good kettle.
