Wishbone with the word wish
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn wishbone shape is shown in dark grey with rough, textured linework and shaded edges. The handwritten word wish in a joined script sits to the upper left of the bone. The design is centred on a plain white background with no body part visible.

Dear Nell,

The wishbone is still on the windowsill above the sink, where your mother used to leave them to dry, and I have walked past it every morning since the wedding. You will remember it was the one from the Sunday roast, the one you and Tom pulled between you across the tablecloth while your father pretended to be cross about the gravy.
Tom won, as you knew he would, and the wish went to the church flowers and the rain that held off until the last hymn. I have been thinking about what you wished, because you never told me, and because I have a suspicion it was the same as mine, though I was too proud to say so at the time.
Your father found a second bone in the hall drawer last week, wrapped in a receipt from Hartley's butchers, and he set it beside the first without a word. Neither of us has touched them. It is a strange sort of kindness, leaving a thing to finish itself.
Come on Sunday and bring the good knife. We will see whose wish has lasted longer, and if it turns out to be yours, I promise I will say nothing about the gravy.
Love, Aunt Ruth
