The generator coughed twice and gave up, and the barn went so dark that Agnes could hear the ewe breathing before she could see her. She swore at the fuse box in the yard, then at her own hands for shaking, and felt along the beam for the spare bulb her father had hung there thirty winters ago, wrapped in a feed sack.

It was cold enough to crack the water trough. The bulb came out of the sack furred with dust, its filament still whole, and she fixed it to the cable that ran from the lean-to, climbing the ladder with the torch clamped in her teeth. When the switch clicked the light came up yellow and thin, and the straw lit gold around the ewe, who lifted her head and looked at Agnes as though she had been kept waiting.

The first lamb came backwards. Agnes knew the trick of it from her father's hands, not her own, so she talked to herself while she worked, low and steady, the way he had talked to the animals and to her mother and to the telephone when the vet was late. Her arms ached to the shoulder. The second lamb followed easily, a small wet thing that sneezed before it stood.

Afterwards she sat on an upturned bucket with the two of them steaming against the ewe's flank and looked up at the bulb swinging gently on its cord. The light made a small round hollow of the dark, and in the hollow the dust drifted like snow. She left it burning until dawn, though the power had come back at three, because someone should be able to see them when they woke.
