Traditional-style flash design of a long-haired woman with hummingbirds, autumn leaves and sunflowers, framed by a rope border with a banner reading CHOOSE YOUR OWN PATH.

Illustrated woman with hummingbirds and banner

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A stylised long-haired woman in a fringed bodice is framed by a rope border, with two green hummingbirds, a feather and autumn leaves around her. Sunflowers and maple leaves sit beneath a curled banner that reads CHOOSE YOUR OWN PATH. The bold dark outlines and flat, saturated colour fills give it a traditional flash look, with warm shading on the skin and a parchment-toned background.

Gemma Pryor still laughed like someone who had been sent out of Mr Halloran's maths room, all shoulders and no apology, and she was the only person from our year who had turned up to the reunion in walking boots. Nobody else mentioned the boots. I had spent twenty years in an insurance office in Reading, so I asked her about everything.

She told me about the summer she spent counting hummingbirds for a conservation trust in the Andes, then a winter laying hedgerows in Northumberland, then a stretch picking apples in Kent where the sunflowers grew taller than the caravans. She had a way of making a life sound like a list of places you could pin to a map. Halfway through her second cider she pulled a paper napkin from her coat pocket and sketched a ring of rope on it, then a feather, then a single word she underlined twice: choose.

'Ours was the year we had to pick our options,' she said. 'You picked the sensible ones. I drew birds all over my form and handed it in anyway. Nobody stopped me. That was the scary part.' She folded the napkin and pushed it across the table, and I didn't know what to say, so I said the thing about the 1998 school trip to Llandudno, and she laughed the old laugh.

On the train home I dug out the box from my loft, the one with my school reports in it. Under Career Aspirations, in my mother's careful hand, someone had written accountant. Beside it, in pencil, was a hummingbird I must have drawn at fourteen, wings blurred, hovering over a line it had not yet decided to cross.
