Tribal pattern across a man's shoulder and upper back

Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A man is photographed from behind, showing a large black tribal tattoo that spans his upper back and the top of his shoulder. The design uses bold curling swirls, tapering blade shapes and bands of chevron and triangle infill. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the pattern is framed against a plain black background.

You have been sanding the same paddle for nine days when Ruatai takes it from your hands and turns it toward the light coming through the palm thatch. "The line is lying to you," she says. Her thumbnail traces a curl near the grip, the spiral the old people called a wave folding back on itself. "It should breathe. Yours is holding its breath."

You bring the adze down again, shallow strokes along the chevrons, the teeth of the band that runs the length of the blade like a row of fish spines. Outside, the reef hums under the north wind and the canoe builders argue about a split hull. Ruatai has no patience for the argument. She makes you count the triangles aloud until the number stops changing, four, eleven, nineteen, and when you lose your place she laughs and says the sea does not count either. It only returns.

On the tenth morning the paddle goes into the lagoon behind the new boat. You watch the blade cut the water clean, and the spiral leaves a ring on the surface that spreads, meets the next ring and the next, until the whole bay is shivering with them. Ruatai stands on the sand with her arms folded. She says nothing for a long time. Then she points past the boat to where the surf breaks white on the reef and says, "There. That is the one you carved."
