Wolf and skull with geometric lines on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf's head with bared teeth and pale eyes is layered over a human skull, with the skull's eye sockets and nasal cavity shaded in solid black. Fine and bold geometric lines cut across the design, along with an open circle and angular shapes at the top and sides. The work is entirely black ink in shades of grey, with the fur and skull detail built up through fine linework and shading.

You have the groma on your shoulder before the sun clears the ridge, its four plumb-lines swinging like weights on a bad clock, and Decimus is already shouting that the road must run true to the north gate. You set the staff on its stone and sight along the first cord, and the thread runs straight into a black gap in the bracken where the ground has sunk.

The wolves have been at the sheep again, the herdsman said last night, and the gap is their earth. You crouch at its lip and see the skull first, a human one, brown and split, its eye holes packed with dark soil, lying among the roots as if someone set it there to mark a boundary. Beside it, half buried, is the grey ridge of a wolf's jaw, teeth still bared at nothing. Decimus tells you to move the stake. You say the cord cannot move, because the plan is already scratched into the wax tablet and the governor reads plans, not ditches.
So you do what surveyors do when the world disagrees with the drawing. You shift the stake one pace east, and the line bends around the hollow in a neat right angle. At the corner you scratch a small circle into the wax to show where the stones of an old well should go. Decimus calls it a fault. You tell him it is an offset, the word your instructor used for lines that must step around what is already there.
By dusk the stakes are in and the road runs its crooked way past the earth. Nobody sees the wolves that night, though you hear them howling along the ridge, and in the morning the sheep are whole. The tablet goes to the governor with the bend still in it. You keep a copy, the circle inked where the skull lay, and you never tell him whose bones they were.
