Wolf and woman portrait on an upper arm sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head wearing a feathered headdress sits above a woman's face, which has painted lines across the cheeks and a beaded necklace at the neck. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights in the wolf's eyes and fur and soft tonal gradients across the woman's skin and hair. The design covers the upper arm in a vertical composition, and the image is shown in greyscale with no colour ink.

Mind the puddles, the lot of you, because the rain has been at this market since before the cheese stall opened, and it will not stop for a story. Stand under the awning. Good. There was a wolf who came down from the hill the winter the mill closed, and he came to the stalls on a Thursday, because nobody on a Thursday ever asks a wolf his business.

He walked between the fishmongers with his grey coat soaked through and a ruff of crow feathers hanging from his ears, as if he had been to a wedding and not been asked. Beside him walked a girl called Hanne Paulsen, who sold eel pies from a barrow with a broken wheel. She had two brothers and a father who bit his nails to the quick, so she was not afraid of anything with teeth. She said, 'You'll want a pie, and then you'll tell me why you're here.'

The wolf said the hill had gone quiet. No rabbits, no owls, only the sound of a town below pretending it could not hear its own rain. He wanted her to come up and listen. She laughed and said the rain was the only thing in this valley that paid its rent on time. But she wrapped a pie in brown paper, pulled on her coat, and the gulls watched the two of them go up the lane together, one grey shape and one red scarf, until the bend took them.

The barrow was found the next morning, still steaming, with the wheel mended and the pies gone. The rain stopped that same hour. Up on the hill the owls started again, and if you go there on a Thursday and hold very still, you will hear a girl humming a tune the wolf taught her, with the crows singing the chorus back, badly.
