Wolf framed by branches on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A wolf's head is shown head-on, with its blue eyes as the only colour, set within a diamond-shaped frame of bare branches. The fur and branches are rendered in fine shading and crisp linework, with dark grey tones building up around the edges. The tattoo sits on a forearm against a plain background, with the wolf's face centred in the upper part of the design.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the coal that spits. No, the wolf did not come down from the hills that winter, whatever your uncle says. It came out of the wood behind Carrow Keep, where the ash trees had been bare since the great frost, and it walked straight through the gate the night the bell rope snapped. Old Maud Tennant was the only one awake in the gatehouse. She said the beast had eyes the blue of a cold pan, and that when it looked at her, the branches on the castle wall shivered as if someone had breathed on them.

Now the lord of Carrow had a son who was thick as a gatepost and twice as proud, and he swore he would hunt the wolf down before the thaw. He took his best horse and his cousin's hunting spear and rode into the dead wood at dawn. For three days the people of the keep heard nothing but crows. On the fourth morning the lord's son walked back over the drawbridge with no spear, no horse, and a face like tallow. He would not say what he had seen, only that the trees had closed behind him like the bars of a cage, and that the wolf had walked beside him the whole way home, never once looking away.
That is the end of the tale, though some say the wolf is still out there, stepping between the branches, keeping watch on anyone who thinks a forest is only wood. Mind the gate when you go home tonight. And if you see a pair of blue eyes in the hedgerow, do not stare back. Just nod, and keep walking.
