Wolf creature and girl with skulls on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a young girl in a short dress standing in front of a large wolf-like creature with pale, round eyes and a mask-like face. A cluster of skulls sits at the bottom of the design, and dark brushed shading fills the background behind the figures. The piece is rendered entirely in black ink and grey tones, with bold linework and loose, sketchy texture across the fur and background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Pell Brothers' Travelling Wonders had lost its elephant in the spring and its strongman to a rival troupe in June, so by August there was only the wolf left to sell. It lived in a cage of iron hoops at the back of the big tent, a grey old thing with a pale face that the bills called the Mask-Wolf of the Hollow Pines. Nobody had seen it hunt. Nobody had seen it eat anything but bread soaked in milk.

The girl who mucked out its straw was called Nell Harker. She was eleven, and she was the only one who had never been afraid of it. Her grandmother had told her that wolves keep the dead company until the living are ready to let them go. Nell did not know if this was true, but she sang to the wolf every night while she worked, and one evening in the last week of the fair, the bolt on its cage slid back on its own.

The wolf walked out past the sleeping ponies and the ringmaster's wagon, and stopped at the edge of the field where the bones of the old show animals had been buried in a heap. Nell followed barefoot through the wet grass. The wolf sat down among the skulls and waited, and when the last lamp in the lane went out, it lifted its great head and howled once toward the dark woods beyond the hedges.

In the morning the cage stood empty and the troupe packed up without a word. Nell kept the iron bolt in her apron pocket. Some said the wolf had gone home to the hills, and others swore a girl walked beside it, but a fair tells a great many lies. What Nell knew was that the field grew green again the following spring, and that she never once again was made to hold a rope.
