Wolf head and arrow on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf head faces forward with an arrow above it and ornamental shapes around the muzzle and below the chin. The design is drawn in thin black linework with light shading, and a single thin red line runs down the arm beneath it. The tattoo sits on the inner forearm, with the hand held out palm up and a wooden floor and stool in the background.

The lift has been broken since March, so you take the stairs with the shopping held against your chest, counting landings the way your mum used to count coins on the kitchen table. On the ninth floor someone has scratched a wolf into the paint with a door key, ears laid flat, eyes two careful dots. You stop to look at it, because nobody on this estate draws anything that isn't a warning or a phone number.

Mr Halloran on the sixth floor tells you the wolf was here before the block, before the car park and the bins, when the ground was still a wood and the wolves came down to the river for water. He says the arrow above the head is not a threat but a direction. You ask him which direction. He shrugs and says the only thing up here that opens is the skylight at the top, and it has been painted shut since the Jubilee.

At the top, the roof door is chained and the skylight is a grey square full of pigeons' feathers. You take a red marker from your coat pocket and, standing on the bottom rung of the ladder, draw a single thin line down the wall from the frame to the floor, the way you would mark a height on a doorframe for a child who is growing too fast. Below you, the lift doors on every floor open and close on nobody. Then you climb down, one landing at a time, and the line stays where you put it.
