Lotus mandala on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical lotus flower with layered petals, leaf shapes and a central teardrop motif sits on the inner forearm. The design uses clean black outlines with dotted and stippled detail along the petals and the central panel. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a plain skin background.

Dear Nell,

The chapel window at Harrowgate Keep is finally down to its bones. Master Tully had us lift the last of the fallen tracery out of the nave yesterday, and I'm writing this with mud still under my nails because I wanted you to hear it before anyone else tells it wrong. The stone in the centre is not a rose, whatever the parish records say. It is a lotus, eight petals stacked in two rings, with a teardrop cut into the middle and a panel of little pits pressed around the edges as if someone had pricked the stone with a compass point.
Tully says the pits were never decoration. Every hollow was drilled by hand, and every one was meant to catch rain. When the window was whole, the water would sit in those dots after a shower, a ring of tiny lights around the petals, and the sexton used to climb up with a cloth to wipe them clean before Sunday. He says the sexton was called Ansel and was the only man in the valley who could read the old Latin, which is how he came to know the carver had been a woman who once sailed east and saw a flower like this growing in a pond.
I don't know how much of that is true. Tully laughs when I ask. But I've stood under that frame for three days with a brush, dusting the pits out, and the petals do look like hands held open to receive something. I've left the central drop unfinished on purpose, so the next mason has a job.
Come up when the frost goes. Bring your good chisel and the wool socks you promised me. The rain has been kind this week, and I want you to see the window full of water.
Yours, Maud
