Small flower with dots on the inner wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small flower with six pointed petals and a shaded, layered centre sits on the inner wrist, with three dots placed around it. The outlines are dark and fairly bold, and the petals and centre are lightly shaded in grey with a faint purple tint. The tattoo is centred on a plain background of skin, with a hand and part of a dark sleeve visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Probert kept the seed in an old tobacco tin, wrapped in a square of her father's handkerchief, and she showed it to no one until the spring the pit went quiet. The men still walked down the lane at half five, but they walked slower, and the slag heap behind Cwm Terrace had begun to grow things nobody had planted: thistle, coltsfoot, a yellow weed that broke through the black grit like a dare.

She had got the seed from a sailor's widow in Swansea who swore it came from a monastery garden in the south of France, where the monks grew flowers with six petals and a heart folded tight like a cabbage bud. Nell did not believe the monks part. She believed the widow had been lonely. She planted it anyway, in a bucket of soil carried up from the allotments, and watered it with cold tea because the tap at number nine ran brown.

It came up in May, pale and stubborn. Her neighbour Idris Vaughan, whose lungs had been ruined by forty years underground, leaned on the gate and said it looked like something stitched onto a Sunday dress. Nell told him to mind his manners. He laughed, then coughed, then asked if she might spare him a cutting for his wife's grave.

By August the flower had opened, six petals spread flat against the heap's grey face, and three seeds had dropped into the dust beside it. Nell pressed them into the grit with her thumb, one, two, three, and went home to wash her hands.
