Wolf head and big cat on arms

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A collage of four photographs of a man's arms showing several tattoos, including a large wolf head with an open mouth on the upper arm and a leaping cat on the forearm. A face and a further design are partly visible on the upper arm and shoulder. The work uses bold black outlines, solid black fills and grey shading, with a dark, heavy composition across the arm.

Dear Tom,

The wolf got loose again on Saturday, halfway through the last waltz, and I'm writing this at the kitchen table with the smell of wet sawdust still in my hair. Nobody was hurt. Mr Adair swears the cat started it, that Sultan saw the bandstand rail and went over it like a man late for a train, and the wolf simply followed the noise.

Ten couples were on the boards when the cat hit the floor. Sultan doesn't land quietly, and the ballroom went one way while the mirror ball went the other. Dolores climbed onto a chair in her green dress and shouted that she'd been promised a foxtrot, not a fight. I went for the doors, though I can't say why, because the only thing out there was rain coming sideways off the front.

By the time the lamps came back up, the wolf's head was lying on the stage with its jaw open, and nobody could say when it had come down off the wall. It had a paper cloakroom ticket tucked under one ear. I still have it. It says Saturday, number nine, and on the back someone has written in pencil, Dance with me or I'll bite.

I haven't told Mr Adair I'm keeping it. Come home for Easter if you can. The wolf is back on its hook, the cat has a new collar, and the band still plays that waltz, slower now, as if they're waiting for someone to come through the door.

Love, Nell
