Wolf head and skull on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf's head faces forward, shaded in fine stippled dots with bold outlines on the ears and fur edges, and sits above a pair of animal skulls. Thin geometric diamond and triangle outlines frame the design behind the wolf and skulls. The tattoo is entirely black and grey, with soft tonal gradations across the face and a clean, centred composition on the thigh.

The grey wolf came up the cliff path the week the fog refused to lift, and she stopped at the gate to study the lamp room rather than me. I had kept the light on Scarrow Head for nine winters and seen foxes, a drowned ewe, two hungry ravens, but nothing that looked at the beam the way a sailor looks at a church bell. In the morning there were three dead gulls on the step, laid out in a row like offerings.

The older men on the mainland said wolves carried the bones of whatever they had outrun. I thought it was nonsense until I found two skulls wedged in the wrack below the ledge, a ewe's and something longer-jawed I could not name, both bleached clean by weather. She had carried them there and left them, as if she were building something I was not meant to understand. I brought them up and set them on the windowsill beside the brass.
That night the fog thinned and the beam swept out over the water. The wolf stood on the rocks below the gallery with her face turned up, her eyes catching the light like two coins. I took the old triangular lens shade from the store and held it so the glow fell on the rocks in a diamond. She stayed where she was and let the light pass over her muzzle again and again, each sweep a little slower than the last.
In spring the supply boat brought the relief keeper early, and I went down to the landing with my bag. The wolf was gone. On the rock where she had stood lay one more skull, the largest yet, its jaw turned toward the tower. I kept it on the sill with the others, and some nights I still lift the shade to the glass and wait for a grey shape on the path.
