Wolf head with mandala pattern on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A wolf's head covers the upper arm, with the left side rendered in soft, shaded realism and the right side broken into dense, ornamental linework of swirls, petals and radiating shapes. The wolf's eyes are the only areas with colour, showing pale blue irises, while the rest of the piece uses black ink and grey shading. The wolf's nose and fur are shaded with smooth gradients, and the patterned side is packed with fine black lines and dots.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the fire's only good for the front of you. You want the story of the wolf who came down to Porthllan the winter the nets failed. Half of him was fur and breath, the way wolves are. The other half was a pattern a net-mender's daughter kept in her head, the swirls and petals she stitched into collars for the widows, every line counted twice.

Her name was Nessa Trewin, and she sat on the harbour wall each evening with her needle and a scrap of grey linen, because her hands would not keep still otherwise. The wolf watched her from the bollards. Nobody in town believed in him except the children and the gulls, and the gulls were no help.

One night the sea took her father's boat and she stopped stitching. The wolf came close enough to rest his head against her knee, and he did not growl. She saw his eyes, pale as the shallows over sand, and understood he was waiting for her to finish what she had started.

So she sat until dawn and drew him. Not the fur, which she could never manage, but the pattern that had always lived in her wrists: circles inside circles, feathers that opened like tide-flowers. Every line she made, the wolf grew another piece of himself, until one side of his face was a storm of ornament and the other still breathed. By morning the boat came in, weed-wrapped but whole, and the bollards were empty, though the linen in her lap was full of teeth and petals.
