Wolf head tattoo on a woman's back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her blonde hair in a loose bun is photographed from behind, her back bare, in a green forest. A wolf's head is tattooed in the centre of her upper back, drawn with fine dark linework and soft grey shading. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against the natural greens of the woodland.

My uncle Ewan swore the wolf had been at every wedding in our valley since the first one, only ever at the edge, where the bracken gave way to the pines. Nobody believed him until the day Morag Reid married the surveyor under the old larches above the reservoir, with a trestle of plum cake and a fiddler who had given up on tuning.

We were halfway through the vows when the bracken moved. It was no dog. The animal stepped out grey as pencil shading, its ruff gone dark where the light didn't reach, and it stood looking at us the way the minister looks at a late hymn. Nobody shouted. My cousin Fraser put a hand on his daughter's shoulder and that was all. The wolf walked the length of the trestle, lifted a single oatcake from the plate without touching the cheese, and sat down beside the bride's mother as if it had been invited.

When the rings came round, the groom patted his waistcoat and found the band was gone. I thought it was a trick until the wolf rose, crossed to his polished shoes and set the ring down on the moss, bright and dull at once. Then it turned and went back into the trees without a sound.

Behind us the larches stood very still, and for a while the only thing moving in the wood was the light, going gold between the trunks.
