Mountain peaks on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three mountain peaks drawn in thin black linework, with the tallest peak in the centre and small dashes beneath suggesting a ridge or snow line. The shading is minimal, relying on open outlines and a few sketchy strokes rather than solid fills. The small design sits on pale skin against a soft, blurred background, with the subject's dark curly hair on the left.

You are forty miles past the last town when the caravan's back axle finally gives up, and Mrs Okonedo, who has run the Halloway and Sons Travelling Fair since before you were born, tells you to fetch the painter from the flatbed before the rain comes over the hill. He is sitting on the step of the bioscope tent with a jar of turpentine and a broken brush, staring at the backdrop he has been paid to repaint. It shows three peaks, the middle one tallest, and the years have faded it to a grey smudge.

"Paint what you can actually see," he says, before you have asked him anything. "Not what the sign says."
You look. Beyond the field, past the hedge and the sodden lane, the real ridge stands against the sky like three shark fins with snow packed into the creases. You take the pencil from behind your ear and sketch on the back of a ticket stub, the way your father taught you to draw a route before a long drive. Thin lines. Hardly any shading. A row of small dashes along the foot, where the scree gives out and the bog begins.
Halfway through the middle peak the rain arrives, and you keep going because the lines are already holding. When you finally look up, the painter has gone quiet, the fair's bulbs are blinking on one by one along the lane, and he is holding the stub up to the glow as if it is a map he has waited years to be handed.
