Wolf head on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded wolf head faces forward across the upper back, with pointed ears, pale eyes and a dark nose. The linework and tonal shading give the fur a detailed, textured look. The photograph is tinted blue-grey, with the tattoo centred in the frame and the person's head turned away from the camera.

The show had been dying for three winters before the wolf was let go. Everyone in the caravans knew it, the way you know a tooth is loose before you touch it. The bills for the big tent had gone unpaid in Lincoln and in Boston, and the painted lions on the side wagon had faded to the colour of weak tea.

The wolf had come to them as a cub from a farmer near Ely, and for eleven years it sat on a red stool at the centre of the ring while Old Tobias Quill fed it strips of salt beef and told the crowd it had once run with the packs in the Pyrenees. Nobody believed him, but the children did. In the last week of September the money ran out in a single night. Tobias counted the coins on the tailboard by lamplight, then went into the wagon and did not come out until morning.
At dawn the wolf was gone and the paddock gate stood open. Mira, who swept the sawdust and was eleven, found the stool on its side in the mud. She followed the prints east along the drove road until the fen went flat and silver, and there, on a rise of dry ground, the wolf stood with its pale eyes fixed on the far line of the water, as if it had been expecting someone to come after it.
She did not call it back. She sat down beside it and they watched the sun come up over the drains together, until the wolf turned and trotted into the reeds without looking round. Mira walked home alone. Tobias never asked where it had gone, and the show folded before the frost. Some evenings, she said, when the light came low over the water, she still heard something padding behind her on the road.
