Realistic wolf head on a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large wolf head is tattooed across the centre of a bare upper back, facing forward with its eyes and muzzle clearly rendered. The linework is fine and the shading is soft and detailed, with dark tones around the ears and fur. The photograph is black and white, and the person's head is turned away so their face is not visible.

Dear Tom, the ferry didn't come again on Tuesday, so the mail is sitting in sacks under the counter and I am writing this on the back of a telegram form, because it is the only paper left in the shop. Mrs Gunn says the big grey thing on the north ridge is a dog belonging to the Carrick boys, but I have seen their collie, and it is a silly brown creature that runs from its own shadow.

Last night I walked out past the cairn with the lamp. The wind had dropped and the bay was the colour of pewter. It came down the path at the height of my hip and stopped, and it looked at me the way the minister looks at a hymn he has forgotten the words to, patient and faintly disappointed. The fur at its neck had silver tips, as if someone had gone over it with a fine pen and rubbed it with a thumb. I did not run. I set the lamp down and it sat.

I am not writing so you will come home and make a fuss. I have sent you six years of letters saying nothing changes here, and that was a lie so you would stop asking. Something has changed. The sheep have started coming down to the shore road, and the old men say the island remembers what it had before the clearances. When I got back to the shop I found the door open and a single wet print on the floorboards, the size of my palm, facing the stairs.

Come at Easter if you can, and bring proper tea, not the tin rubbish from the Co-op. Leave the dog with Mother. I will leave the lamp in the window, and if there is a shape on the ridge, do not shout. Sit on the step and wait. It knows our family's voices.
