Brother Anselm to Prior Osric, at the abbey of Saint Brannoc, on the feast of the Holy Innocents.

Reverend Father, you asked for a plain account of the wolf, so here it is plainly. It came down off the fell on the third night of the snow and sat outside the infirmary door as if it had been sent for. Brother Col put down his lantern and would have run, but the beast only looked at him with its jaws parted a finger's width, showing the teeth, and went on looking.

Its mane is not fur as we understand it. Where the hair should lie, there are scales, or what I can only call scales, set in diamonds like the lead in the east window, each one edged dark as if drawn with a fine pen. Brother Wenlock says the pattern is older than the abbey and that the old masons carved it on the lintel for a reason nobody now remembers. I have looked at the lintel since and cannot see the match, though the wolf's jaw does seem to open the way the carved one does.

We fed it what was left of the Christmas bread and it ate without touching our hands. In the morning the snow was marked with its tracks going west, and beside the last print lay a single iron key, warm to the touch, that fits no lock in the valley.

I have hung the key above the lectern. The brothers call it a sign. I call it a key, and I suspect someone somewhere west of the fell has a door that has been waiting for a wolf.
