Wolf head with mandala and geometric pattern on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic wolf head with shaded fur and pale eyes sits at the centre of the design. A dotwork mandala crowns the wolf, and a geometric pattern of overlapping circles fills the area beneath its muzzle. The piece is rendered in black and grey on an upper thigh, photographed against a wooden floor.

The wolf came down from the high corrie the week the ice went out, and nobody in Glen Arnach admitted to seeing her cross the bridge at Lochan Dubh. Old Morag swore she wore a crown of frost on her brow, pale rings built from smaller rings, the way rime furs a fence wire when the wind drops. The children believed her. The shepherds only believed in the lambs they were missing.

I was the one who counted the flock that spring, so the wolf chose me. She sat on the cairn above the tarn each dusk, eyes the grey-blue of a November loch, and watched me climb the path with my tin of oatcake. My uncle Donald said wolves do not stay where they cannot leave, and that I should stop feeding a thing that would eat me if it were hungry enough. I kept climbing anyway, and I left the tin lid off so she could smell the salt.
On the last evening of May she did not wait on the cairn. She was at the edge of the peat, and she had drawn in the wet black mud with one forepaw: a ring, then another ring cutting through it, then more, until the whole shape stood like a lattice of overlapping circles. I crouched beside it and understood at once. Each ring sat over a spring, and the springs were the ones the old drovers had dug and then forgotten. Morag had said the glen was dying of thirst under its bog, and nobody had listened.
I went down that night and told Donald where to dig. The wolf was gone by morning, and her circles were already brimming with clear water, bright as the frost she had worn on her brow. By the time the sheep were back on the hill, the ground had remembered its springs.
