Wolf head with lattice pattern on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A snarling wolf head faces left, with open jaws, bared teeth and a heavy outlined snout. Its mane is filled with a bold diamond lattice of solid black shading that creates strong graphic contrast. Only black ink and grey tones are used, and a red leather surface sits softly out of focus behind the arm.

The wolf came down from the high pass the night the Greywater froze to its bed, and it did not hurry. Old Maud Tallow saw it first from the byre door, her lamp held low so the oil would not gutter. The kingdom of Veyl had no king that winter, only a council of millers who quarrelled over grain. They had put a silver penny on every wolf pelt after the sheep were taken, and the penny was the only law anyone trusted. Maud knew this wolf had driven the sheep back down the pass, away from the starving villages above the snowline. Nobody believed her, and nobody asked her twice.

She went out with bread and her carving knife. The wolf lay down in the snow and let her lift its lip. Under the mane, where the fur should have been thick, was a net of frost-black cord knotted in diamonds, each knot a storm that had been held back from a village. She understood then that the wolf had been wearing the mountain's weather like a coat, and that every diamond was a house kept from freezing.

In spring the council found its pennies still in the chest. Maud kept the knife. Every autumn after, a grey shape stood at the edge of the Tallow fields, watching the pass, and no one in Veyl hung a price on it again.
