The banner came back from the ford with its wolf's mane split open along the left shoulder, a bolt-hole where the lattice should have been. Maud Harrow laid it across the long table in the cold kitchen of Greywater Keep and smoothed the black wool with both palms, the way her father had taught her before the fever took him. No one else in the valley could draw a diamond lattice that square by eye, so the steward sent for her before the garrison had even stripped their mail.

She worked through the night by one tallow candle. Every diamond had to be stitched at the same tension, or the beast looked as though it were snarling through a fence rather than out of a field. The men came in and out for bread and watched her. Old Corwen, who had carried the banner at the last siege, asked why she bothered when the lord had ridden south and not one of them had been paid since harvest.
"Because the wolf is still on the wall," she said, and bit off the thread.
At first light she hauled the banner up the gatehouse and pinned it to the post where the wind could take it. The road below lay white and empty to the tree line, and the men on the battlements could see only the mended beast facing out over it, jaws open, mane bristling like a hauberk. Then a single rider appeared on the far bank of the frozen river, reined in, and looked up for a long moment.
He lifted one gloved hand, not in threat but in greeting, and turned his horse back toward the trees. Maud wiped the needle on her apron and went down to find something hot to eat.
