Wolf head with branches on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A wolf's head is the central subject, shaded in fine grey dotwork and stippling with a snarling muzzle and pale green eyes. Thin black branches and angular lines cross over and around the head, enclosing it in a triangular frame. The skin is photographed against dark blue trousers, with the ink almost entirely black and grey apart from the small coloured eyes.

The wolf came down off the hill the week the ferry stopped, and it did not look at the sheep. Old Morag Tulloch said so at the pier, her hands folded over her apron, and nobody argued, because she had been right about the tide in 1979 and about her own husband.

Her grandson Iain went up the glen with a lantern and a length of blackthorn. He found the wolf at the edge of the bracken where the rowan branches grew thick and tangled, a grey beast with its muzzle wrinkled back and eyes the colour of sea glass under the moon. It did not snarl at him. It stood in the lattice of branches as though it had been placed there, a picture drawn inside a triangle of stone.

He stayed still until his knees ached. Then he understood the thing Morag had never told anyone: the island's old wall had been built in three lines, and the wolf was the gap between them. Every winter someone had to walk into the frame and be looked at. Iain set down his stick, unhooked the lantern, and waited for the eyes to decide.

They softened at last, and the wolf turned back into the hill, carrying the cold with it. When Iain came down at dawn the sheep were bunched in the lee of the dyke, counted and whole, and Morag was waiting at the pier with a cup of tea gone lukewarm in her hands. She did not ask what he had seen. She only nodded at the rowan berries stuck to his sleeve and said he had been gone long enough to be trusted.
