Wolf head with branches on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf's head with pale eyes and a dark nose is shaded in greys and sits at the centre of the design. Fine branches cross over the wolf and extend outward, forming a framing pattern. The image is a photograph of a forearm with a predominantly grey and black tattoo, taken at a slight angle against a blue-toned background.

Dear Nell, the wolf came back on Tuesday, though nobody had let him out. Mr Halloran swears he latched the cage at Hartlepool and found it open at Thirsk, the padlock lying in the straw like a dropped sweet. I went looking with the lantern because I was the only one still awake, and the frost had gone to ice in the lanes.

The blackthorn along the old pit road had grown up over the ruts so thick that the lorries couldn't get through without a man walking ahead with a billhook. Dad always said that wood belonged to something older than the farm. I found the wolf standing in the middle of the lane, looking back at me through a gap in the branches as if he had been waiting for the lantern to come along. His eyes caught the light, pale as wet pebbles.
I didn't run. I put the lantern down, sat on the wagon step, and we looked at each other until my fingers went numb. Then he turned and walked into the thorns, and the branches closed behind him like a gate. By morning the cage was still open and the caravan windows were furred with frost, but the bush at the gate had new twigs on it, pale green, the kind that shouldn't come before March.
I've told Mr Halloran I'll stay on for the spring run, since somebody has to keep the gate shut. Tell Mum I'm eating properly. The wolf hasn't come back, but I leave the lamp lit at the end of the field, and each morning the hedge looks a little more grey and a little less like a road.
