Horned ram with third eye and flowers

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A black line drawing on tracing paper shows a ram-like creature head with curled horns and a single eye set in its forehead. Flowers and leaves frame the head and extend down into a larger bloom at the base. The linework is bold and even, with hatching on the horns and petals, and the design is uncoloured.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ram came up through the feed hatch on the third morning after the breach, its horns scraping the ladder rungs, and nobody on Hollis Deck argued about whether it was real. We had all been counting the dead since the hull split. A living thing with curled horns and a cold grey eye in its brow was easier to believe in than anything else we had left.

I was the one who fed the bloom-vats, so it came to me. The old crew had grown flowers for the chapel bay, big open things the colour of rust and tinned peaches, and when the lights failed they kept going on their own roots in the dark. The ram ate the petals first. Then it stood at the rail with its forehead lens turning slowly toward the dead dome of the observation port, tracking something beyond the glass that I could never see.

On the sixth day it walked the length of the greenhouse and stopped at the locked seed crate that Pell had sworn was empty. It pushed the lid with its nose until the latch gave. Inside were bulbs wrapped in oilcloth, each one stamped with a leaf, and the eye in its forehead closed, the way a person shuts their eyes when they have finally got home.

I planted them in the last good soil, under the one lamp that still worked. Pell called it foolishness. The ram lay down beside the tray and did not get up again. By the time the lamp dimmed for night shift, green shoots had pushed through, and the horn-shadow on the wall looked like a pair of hands cupped around something small and bright.
