Wolf in sheep's clothing on the back of the neck
Realism · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf's head with amber-toned eyes emerges from a sheep's woolly body, which stands on short grass at the base of the neck. The fleece is rendered with dense, textured shading and fine stippled edges, while the wolf's face has sharper detail and stronger contrast. The image is a close view of the back of a person's head and shoulders, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Owen,

Don't let the ewes see you hang the dog lead on the gate hook like that, and don't mention the wolf to Mrs Pryce until you've seen it with your own eyes. She'll have the whole valley up the fell with pitchforks by Tuesday, and half of them will shoot the wrong animal.
I'm not joking. Since the thaw the flock on the top field has been counting wrong, one ewe too many at dusk, always the same grey shape standing at the back with its head low. I thought it was Gideon's old fleece on the peg in the shed, the one I couldn't bring myself to burn after he died. Then I found the peg bare and a trail of wet wool leading to the wall.
I sat up in the fold last night with the storm lamp and a flask. Around two the ewes went quiet all at once, the way they do before a fox. The grey one stood up on its back legs, which no sheep does, and I saw amber where its eyes should have been. It undid the zip down its chest with two neat fingers, stepped out of the fleece and folded it over the rail, very tidy, like a man taking off his coat in a pub.
Then it looked straight at my lamp and walked back into the wool. I still don't know which of them went down the hill. The fleece is on the hook by the kettle now. Keep the lamp lit tonight, and if you find the zip undone, come and get me.
Yours, Walt
